WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Over 30% of Canadians are considered to be overweight. As we age, excess weight can have negative effects on our physical function and quality of life.

What Causes Weight Gain?

The most common reasons include consuming too many calories and a lack of physical activity. Other factors include:

  • Low thyroid
  • Medicinal side effects
  • Smoking cessation
  • Aging

What we eat, the amount we eat and a lack of physical activity results in an “epidemic” of an overweight population:

  • Processed and junk foods are convenient, but are often high in calories and unhealthy fat
  • When dining out, people are more likely to eat more and consume more fat Physical activity levels are a lot lower due to day-to-day work and home routines

What are the Risks?

Being overweight can increase your risk for early death. You are also at an increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis.

Start Managing Your Weight

Speak to your healthcare provider about your plan and any medical conditions that may affect your diet or limit your ability to exercise.
To lose weight, reduce your caloric intake and increase the amount of calories burned through physical activity:

  • Aim for 30 minutes of moderate to intense activities on most days. Choose activities that you enjoy doing
  • Keep low calorie, high-fibre snacks readily available
  • Eat 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily
  • Remove fat from meat, use vegetable oils for cooking and avoid fried foods
  • Drink water

Slow and Steady Weight Loss

Changing your daily habits will translate into long-lasting results. The usual recommendation is a loss of 10% of your current weight shed over 6 months. While you may want dramatic changes, it is healthier and more permanent to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week. Your local pharmacist can help answer common weight loss questions including:

  • What weight loss products are suitable for me?
  • What is a diet diary?
